Digestive Concerns

IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a long-term functional disorder of the digestive system: the gut looks structurally normal, yet pain, bloating and changing bowel habits come and go.

What is happening

In IBS the structure of the gut is intact but its behaviour is not settled. Muscle contractions can be too fast or too slow, and the gut wall can register ordinary sensations as painful. Because the nervous system is closely involved, stress, sleep and routine influence symptoms as directly as food does.

The three patterns

IBS-C leans towards constipation, IBS-D towards diarrhoea, and IBS-M alternates between the two. Knowing your dominant pattern shapes everything that follows — the food guidance, the pace of practice and even the timing of meals.

What helps day to day

Regular meal times, a lighter dinner taken well before sleep, adequate water spread through the day, gentle yoga and pranayama, and a protected sleep window. Keep a two-week note of meals, sleep and symptoms; patterns you cannot see in memory become obvious on paper.

Please note

This page is general wellness education, not a diagnosis. Persistent, severe or new symptoms — and warning signs such as blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, repeated vomiting or anaemia — need a qualified healthcare professional. Our guidance works alongside your doctor's care, never in place of it.

Each condition page clearly states that diagnosis and medical treatment require the advice of a qualified healthcare professional.
