Abdominal pain
Pain in the abdomen has many possible causes, from ordinary digestive upset to conditions that need urgent care — which is why the pattern of the pain matters.
Reading the pattern
Where the pain sits, how long it lasts, whether it relates to meals or to passing stool, and what makes it better or worse all carry information. Functional pain — as in IBS — typically comes and goes and often eases after a bowel movement.
When to seek help immediately
Sudden severe pain, a rigid abdomen, fever, persistent vomiting, blood in the stool or vomit, or pain that steadily worsens are emergencies. Please seek medical care straight away rather than waiting.
Please note
This page is general wellness education, not a diagnosis. Persistent, severe or new symptoms — and warning signs such as blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, repeated vomiting or anaemia — need a qualified healthcare professional. Our guidance works alongside your doctor's care, never in place of it.
Each condition page clearly states that diagnosis and medical treatment require the advice of a qualified healthcare professional.
