What is IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a long-term functional disorder of the digestive system — the gut looks structurally normal, yet it behaves unpredictably.

What "functional" means

"Functional" is the important word here. The structure of the gut is intact — which is why scans and endoscopies usually come back clear — but its behaviour is not settled. Muscle contractions run too fast or too slow, and the gut wall registers ordinary sensations more intensely than it should.

A normal report is not a dead end

Many people leave a clinic feeling dismissed because nothing was found. A normal report is genuinely good news — it rules out the conditions that need urgent treatment. It also tells you where the work actually lies: in routine, food habits, sleep and stress.

How common it is

IBS is very common worldwide, and in India too. Many people live with it for years, calling it a "weak stomach" or "a gas problem". Simply having a name for it is often the first relief, because a named problem can be worked on methodically.

Where to begin

Start by observing rather than changing. For two weeks, note meal times, what you ate, sleep hours, stress level and symptoms. Most people find two or three clear patterns they had never connected — and those patterns are where a plan starts.

Please note

This page is general health education, not a diagnosis. Persistent, severe or new symptoms — and warning signs such as blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, repeated vomiting or anaemia — need a qualified healthcare professional. Our guidance works alongside your doctor's care, never in place of it.
