In IBS-C, hard or infrequent stools come together with abdominal pain and a sense of incomplete evacuation. The pain is the distinguishing feature; simple constipation without discomfort is a different picture.
Fibre needs water and patience
Increasing fibre suddenly, without increasing water, commonly makes bloating worse. Raise it gradually over two to three weeks and drink steadily through the day rather than in large amounts at once.
Routine does the heavy lifting
A fixed, unhurried bathroom window — usually after a warm drink in the morning — trains the rhythm back. Never ignore the urge when it comes. Daily walking and gentle abdominal practice both help.
When to check with a doctor
New constipation after the age of 50, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss or anaemia need medical assessment, not lifestyle adjustment.
