What is IBS?

A plain-language explanation of Irritable Bowel Syndrome — what it is, what it is not, and why tests often come back normal.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a long-term functional disorder of the digestive system. "Functional" is the important word: the gut is structurally normal, which is why scans and scopes usually come back clear, but its behaviour is unsettled. Muscle contractions run too fast or too slow, and the gut wall registers ordinary sensations more intensely than it should.

Why normal tests are not a dead end

Many people leave a clinic feeling dismissed because nothing was found. A normal report is genuinely good news — it rules out the conditions that need urgent treatment. It also tells you where the work actually lies: in routine, food habits, sleep and stress, rather than in a missing diagnosis.

The three patterns

IBS-C leans towards constipation, IBS-D towards diarrhoea, and IBS-M alternates between them. Identifying your dominant pattern shapes the guidance that follows, because the same advice does not suit both directions.

Where to begin

Start by observing rather than changing. For two weeks, note meal times, what you ate, sleep hours, stress level and symptoms. Most people find two or three clear patterns they had never connected — and those patterns are where a plan starts.
